Plant Information

The Monstera Peru Variegated, or as it is known by its scientific name, the Monstera Karstenianum Variegata, is a tropical plant that is native to Central and South America. The plant has thick, glossy, heavily textured deep green leaves that are generally smaller than those of more common Monstera Deliciosa. The deep ridges on a Peru resemble reptile skin, and in mature form, the leaves fenestrate, though this can take several years for an indoor houseplant.

The variegation starts as a bright green and, as the leaf matures, hardens off to a first bold, then pale, yellow. Occassionally, the variegation is sectoral, establishing a true show-stopper of a plant.  Monstera Peru is a fast-growing vining plant that can grow up to several meters long.

Monstera plants make stunning indoor focal points with their bold foliage and tropical vibes. With the right care, they can grow into impressive specimens that add a touch of jungle-like beauty to your home or office. As monstera mature, they vine or climb, depending on the varietal.  This monstera is suited for either, and makes either an attractive hanging basket, or a statement piece attached to a moss pole for support.

Care and Maintenance

Remember that each plant is unique, so closely monitor your plant and adjust its care based on its response. By providing the right conditions, you'll be rewarded with a stunning and healthy plant that adds a touch of tropical elegance to your indoor space.

Light

Provide bright, indirect light for your monstera. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but its coloration will be most pronounced and attractive in moderate to bright indirect light. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves.

Temperature

Maintain a comfortable room temperature between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Keep it away from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.  To encourage more rapid growth in your monstera, keep the monstera at the upper end of the recommended range, or even slightly higher.

Watering

Water the plant when the top inch or so of the soil feels dry, and be cautious not to overwater, as monstera are sensitive to soggy soil. Water thoroughly when needed, but ensure that the pot has proper drainage to prevent waterlogged roots.

Soil

Use a well-draining potting mix to prevent overwatering. A mix of regular potting soil, leca, bark, perlite, and peat moss or coconut coir works well.

Fertilization

Feed your monstera with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). During growing season, some monstera varietals require heavier feedings or more frequent fertilization. Reduce or eliminate fertilization during the fall and winter when growth slows down.

Humidity

Monstera can tolerate average indoor humidity levels. However, they usually benefit from increased humidity. Misting the plant, running a humidifier or using a humidity tray can help.  Pair increased humidity with increased temperature to encourage growth.

Pruning

Trim any yellowing or dead leaves to maintain the plant's appearance and encourage new growth.

Potting

Repot your monstera when it becomes root-bound or outgrows its current container. Repotting is best done in the spring.

Dusting

Dust can accumulate on the leaves, hindering their ability to absorb light. Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth or give the plant a shower occasionally to keep it clean.

Pests and Diseases

Keep an eye out for common houseplant pests like spider mites, thrips, aphids, and mealybugs. If you spot any pests, take action promptly with appropriate treatments.

Rotation

To ensure even growth and avoid the plant leaning towards the light source, rotate it every couple of weeks.
